Due to her background as an instrumentalist, her music aims at being performed; she writes music with actual instrumentalists in mind, as she believes that music only lives when it is being played. Her music explores repetition through different forms, sounds and compositional techniques.

Baqaya

2013

Translates as what is left over, is a work for solo piano. The work is based on a melody found on a small piece of paper dating back to 1998 among some scribbles.

Completely raw and unworked, this melody helped start the process of composition. Because this musical idea was born on the oud, the music is infused with Arabic rhythms and glimpses of Arabic maqamat.

As I Tell It…

2015

Is a six movement work, each movement written for varying instrument combinations using voice, clarinet, viola and piano, featuring the poetry of Tarik Hamdan. The work deals with the concept of time, the meanings formed through sheer coincidence due to passage of time, the disappointments and hopes, and the resulting contradictory and often incomprehensible feelings that remain.

In Air

2018

A work for piano duo. The work uses a three-note motive from a musical theatre piece “Hunger” composed in collaboration with Maya Khaldi. The motive is employed by the  “phasing” compositional technique, allowing the two players to play the same repetitive material in steady but not identical tempi, thus generating a variety of combinations, which arise during the performance. This is music that concerns process; process not in the sense of the compositional process, but rather the process of the music and the experience of that.
